En flott gjeng med nye guider

Her ser vi deltakerne på "Autorisasjonsprogram for guider i Narvikregionen 2011-2012". Her er det mye god kompetanse som vi er glade for å få inn i NarvikGuide. Vi er halveis i programmet og skal nå gå i gang med prosjektoppgaver, endelig eksamen gjennomføres i mars 2012. 

Vi i NarvikGuide ser med glede frem til å få de nye guidene klare for oppdrag sommeren 2012!

   

Alt for turistene

Narviks museer tar samlet i mot turistene - som strømmer til byen.
   
Museum Nord Narvik, Krigsminnemuseet og turist kontoret har gått sammen om å lage en brosjyre for turistene som kommer til Narvik.

- En skikkelig brosjyre er både vanskelig og dyr for små reiselivsaktører. Tilbud samlet slik er enklere for turistene også, forklarer Malin Backlund hos turistkontoret i Narvik.

Fantastisk ekstrajobb

Inger Krane (til høyre i foto) er lærer i Narvik og er blant de fem i Narvik som i dag har gjennomført autorisasjonprogram for guider i 2009/2010.

– Det har vært en utrolig berikelse for meg. Jeg har lært enormt, ikke minst om lokalhistorien, sier hun. I tillegg er det en både godt betalt og lystbetont sommerjobb for en lærer. Og når jeg går av med pensjon om noen år, er planen å fortsatte å jobbe som guide, forteller hun, som gjerne oppfordrer sine lærerkolleger til å ta kurset. – Det er jo mest å gjøre om sommeren, da har man jo mye fritid som lærer, sier hun.

Fulltallig autorisasjonsprogram

Vi har nå 18 deltakere i programmet og er godt fornøyd med responsen! 

Folkeuniversitetet i samarbeid med Destination Narvik, kommunene, NarvikGuide, Cruise Narvik og Norges Guideforbund, gjennomfører et lokalt tilpasset kurs for autorisering av nye guider i Ofotenregionen.

Ved å øke antall guider/verter og heve kompetansen til næringslivet vil vi gi turister og besøkende en enda bedre forståelse og opplevelse av Ofoten. Dette er viktig for å styrke turistnæringen og bidra til vekst og verdiskaping i kommunene.
  
Programmet vil være basert på ca 8 helgesamlinger i perioden mai 2011 til mars 2012. 
   

Pride of Narvik, Fagernes mountain

Join your guide at the pier and drive past the harbour and iron ore producer LKAB's shipping port and through the heart of Narvik and the town square. Your coach will stop off at the powerstation from where there are fantastic views across the town, the Ofotfjord and the Rombakfjord.

Your coach continues to the cable car which you will board for the scenic eight-minute journey up Fagernesfjellet. The mountain is home to a popularski resort and skiers descend from more than 4,000 feet abovesea level. The cable car stop is about 2,100 feet above sea leveland affords fantastic views all the way to Lofoten on a clear day. Refreshments will be served in the restaurant here before thereturn cable car ride.

City sightseeing and War History

Join a coach to hear about the history of Narvik from your local guide. You will be shown some of the city's most important sights as your guide explains about the origins of the town as a base from where iron ore is shipped.

Several important battles were fought in Narvik during World War II and many soldiers lost their lives here.

Your tour will take you to visit the war cemetery where British, French, Polish, German and Norwegian soldiers are all buried. The town was badly damaged during the first few months of the war and on April 9, 1940 it was invaded by the Germans. Less than two months later, the allies managed to recapture the city but as troops were required elsewhere, it fell to the Germans again who occupied it for a further five years. This fascinating story is told in chronological order by way of exhibits, models, charts and maps at the war museum.

Narvik

The town of Narvik came into existence to serve the needs of the iron ore industry.

Iron is mined in neighbouring Sweden, and Narvik was chosen as the location from where to ship it as it offers an ice-free port. This industrial heritage has shaped the town and now forms the basis of some of its tourist attractions, as can be discovered on some of the four excursions we offer in and around the town.

In 1883 a British/Swedish company was given permission to build a railway from the iron mines in Sweden to Narvik, which was then christened Victoriahavn.

The railway, the Ofotbanen, opened in 1902 and the town built up around this industry. Unfortunately much of the town was destroyed in World War II when it came under German occupation for some five years and was the scene of battles on land, at sea and in the air.

The local war museum documents the history of this period with exhibitions and displays explaining the sequence of events.
